Go watch Asobi Asobase

Seems like harmless fluff doesn’t it?

Probably the funniest anime show this summer season was Asobi Asobase. 12 episodes aired between July 8 and September 23 (available for international streaming via crunchyroll.com). It’s based on the ongoing manga series written and illustrated by Rin Suzukawa (currently collected in 6 volumes).

At a glance it might appear to be your regular slice of life anime featuring an all female cast of high school girls doing ordinary high school things, the OP might lead you to believe similar thing. Even the blurb about the show isn’t very exciting, “The story revolves around three classmates who play simple hand games”. However, Asobi Asobase is following in the footsteps of some weird and sometimes pretty extreme Japanese comedies. If you enjoy things like Azumanga Daioh, Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou, Nichjiou or Sakigake! Cromartie Koukou then Asobi Asobase is perfect for you. The animation might seem a bit off at the beginning, it certainly is pretty unique, but the share humour will win you over in a heartbeat.
